Important things to remember
about the effects of littering.

How does litter threaten our waterways, people,
birds, fish, and marine mammals?

80% of marine litter comes from land- based sources: beach users, storm runoff, landfills, solid waste, debris carried in rivers and streams, poorly maintained garbage bins, and litter bugs.

Each year millons of birds, turtles, fish, and marine mammals are killed after getting tangled in marine debris or ingesting plastics - their habitat can be damaged and destroyed.

Swimmers and divers can become entangled in abandoned nets and fishing lines.

Beach users are injured by stepping on broken glass, cans, needles, and other litter.

Floating debris and litter on beaches causes lost tourism revenues and costs local municipalities millions of dollars annually to clean up.

Marine debris is a navigational hazard for fishing and recreational boats- entangling propellers and clogging intake valves.

                              UNSPLASH the TRASH.
