United States Power Squadron "America's Boating Club" The United States Power Squadron Joins in the Efforts to Save the Environment The United States Power Squadron was organized in 1914. USPS is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to making boating safer by teaching classes in seamanship, navigation and other related subjects. USPS members contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education. Local Squadrons offer boating safety courses on a regular basis to boaters in their community. The courses are open to the public. USPS has been offering courses for over a half a century. USPS members take part in many different programs. We help the National Ocean Service keep our nautical charts accurate, we have a cooperative program with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary where we conduct Vessel Safety Checks of boats at the request of their owners, and we offer many other educational courses. For example, cruise planning, engine maintenance, electronics, piloting and many more. The USPS Environmental Committee was formed in January 2004. The Environmental Committees' objectives are to educate membership, publicize efforts within, and publicize efforts externally. We need to educate our members and the public regarding the importance of protecting our marine environment for today and the future through education. The USPS has joined in the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup. This years date for the international coastal cleanup is Saturday, 20 September 2008. This is the largest and most successful volunteer event of its kind. The success of this event depends on individuals like you! Boaters can reach areas not covered by shoreline volunteers. Trash removed from our waterways saves marine life and habitats. Please volunteer for this event. Together we can make a difference.
