"Safety Comes First" "Important Tips To Remember" Safety First: Stay away from large drums or five-gallon buckets. Report their location to the Department of Environmental Resources at 516-677-5943 for proper removal. Children under 12 must wear a PFD(personal floating device) Collection of debris must be made within your vessel. It is unlawful to sit on the bow of your vessel. Always wear gloves and water shoes when collecting debris. Becareful of glass, syringes, or other sharp objects. Watch for wildlife. Don't lift anything heavy. Debris Collection Top ten debris items usually collected are: cigarette filters, food bags/wrappers, caps/lids, beverage bottles(plastic), beverage bottles(glass), straws, beverage cans, bottlecaps, other (plastics), and cups and utensils. Don't collect natural items like driftwood or seaweed. Things to Bring Plenty of water. Sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. Insect repellent. A camera to document any strange items. Work gloves or rubber gloves. A net. Dead, stranded or live entangled animals Do not attempt to free any live entangled animals. Do not touch or remove any stranded or dead animals. Report their location to the Dept. of Environmental Resources for proper removal. Volunteers Count!
