                                               A Message From
             Town Supervisor John Venditto,
                        Town of Oyster Bay

Dear Residents,

The Town of Oyster Bay has partnered with the Jones Beach Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadron in a new program called W.A.K.E. U.P.( Waterways Adopted Keep Environments Undamaged and Protected), which is designed to help clean up our south shore waterways. Under the program, which is being coordinated by the Town's Department of Environmental Resources and the Jones Beach Power Squadron Environmental group, volunteers will head out to the bay and canals once a month to collect as much trash as possible.   Trash bags supplied by the Town of Oyster Bay will help this effort.   Individuals or boating organizations can adopt a particular area to be cleaned.

Oyster Bay is blessed with beautiful waterways along the entire south shore.   This program will benefit wildlife and plants by creating cleaner, trash-free habitats.   It will also serve to educate the volunteers involved with the cleanup and about environmental responsibility and stewardship by giving them a firsthand view of  of the impact trash has on our canals and bay; I can think of no better education about the harm garbage causes marine life and boaters than by bagging it for several hours.  The program will also benefit water beyond our bay and canals.

I thank those of you who are giving your time and efforts to this unique program. You are playing an important role in maintaining the health of our bay and canals. For those of you who are looking for a great way to help preserve our natural  marine resources, I urge to contact the Department of Environmental Resorces at 516-677-5943 or  516-677-5712 to find ot how you can become part of the W.A.K.E.  U.P. movement.

                                               Very Truly Yours,

                                               John Venditto
